About Anders Dræby, Professional Doctor of Existential Psychotherapy
DProf MHH MA BA MPF
Welcome. My name is Anders Dræby (or Anders Dræby Sørensen). I am originally from Eastern Jutland, Denmark, but have been based in Copenhagen for many years. Throughout my life, I have carried a deep desire to understand the human condition through its limits, crises, and points of rupture. Today, my focus is also on helping people navigate crises, anxiety, and difficult life transitions.
I work as an existential psychotherapist in Copenhagen and also offer clinical supervision and existential coaching. For me, this work is not merely a profession. It is closely connected to my own life journey and my writing.
My background is multidisciplinary, and this website offers insight into both my professional work and my broader intellectual interests. Earlier in my career, I worked with leadership, education, and philosophy, and I have written on topics such as education, the art of living, and wisdom beyond the scope of clinical practice. In recent years, however, my primary focus has been psychotherapy and supervision, with a particular emphasis on life capability—the ability to live one’s life as oneself, even under difficult circumstances.
I am not a public figure in the traditional sense. I have chosen to focus on my professional work while otherwise living a private life. I do not subscribe to any particular belief system or ideology, nor do I belong to any movement or alternative community. I am grounded in myself, both professionally and personally, and my life is rooted in experience, independence, and realism.
I live according to five core values: Integrity. Truth. Justice. Freedom. Responsibility. They are my compass—in my work, in relationships, and in life. I am politically neutral and independent, but as a private individual I value personal conscience and remain critical of institutions that reduce human beings to categories, functions, or diagnoses.
Background and Approach
I hold a professional doctorate in Existential Psychotherapy from Middlesex University in London and am certified in psychotherapy by Regent’s University London. In addition, I have completed university studies in psychology and health sciences and originally earned a Master’s degree in philosophy and intellectual history.
Although I began my path within academia, over the years I have moved away from it and developed a more grounded and depth-oriented therapeutic practice. I do not work with superficial solutions or symptom management alone, but with existential transformation.
I work with people whose lives no longer hold together in their previous form, where the task is not to restore the old structure but to discover the life that is attempting to emerge. My practice is particularly relevant for people facing life crises, existential crises, difficult transitions, existential anxiety, and inner unrest. It is often through confronting what is difficult that human beings discover and develop their capacity for life.
I work with a distinctive Nordic approach to existential psychotherapy that is both grounded and deep, with the aim of helping people become more life-capable through necessary change. It is professional, research-informed, and experience-based psychotherapy focused on lasting change.
I remain calm and steadfast in the face of difficulty—without turning away or retreating—and can serve as an anchor and guide through crisis, transition, grief, loss, the search for meaning, difficult choices, resistance, and existential anxiety; experiences that can be difficult to navigate alone without depth of insight and experience.
